Newman Bright a.k.a Young Brova, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, rapper, actor, producer and entrepreneur.

Born in Niger Delta but grew up in London, Young Brova clearly has a running passion for music. Though he started as a rap artist, he soon discovered his unique voice and switched to singing. His influences include Coldplay, Jay-Z and Ne-Yo.

Young brova co-owns 2Minute Entertainment. His first single "Whine For Me" was recorded with his former group mate, Sly Sotie. The group also worked with Side ONE, Maleke and I Go Die.

WIZKID, BANKY W DEBUT IN MTV DRAMA SERIES - SHUGA

Rape, commercial sex and male homosexuality are just some of the important topics being laid bare in Shuga: Love, Sex, Money, the new seven-part drama series about sex-and-relationships amongst contemporary African youth. The red carpet premiere of Shuga: Love, Sex & Money will take place in Nairobi on February 10, 2012.

Produced by MTV Networks Africa in association with The MTV Staying Alive Foundation, PEPFAR and the Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation (HFG), Shuga: Love, Sex, Money was conceived in order to spread the message of responsible sexual behaviour and tolerance. The initiative, funded extensively by the U.S. Government through PEPFAR, is working closely with the Government of Kenya to ensure the programme fits within Kenya's existing HIV prevention strategy.

A brutally honest account of emotional relationships among Kenyan youth, Shuga: Love, Sex, Money – is set to explode the romantic hearts-and-chocolates view of Valentine's Day, with a hard-hitting series debut on 14 February 2012 (21:30 CAT, MTV Base, DSTV Channel 322).

Kenyan actress, Nancy Wanjiku Karanja, 24, features in a key story line about rape when her character Baby is attacked by a trusted older relative. Other themes playing out against the background of Kenya's clubs, bars, hangouts and ghettos include commercial sex and male homosexuality.

Nancy Karanja is joined in the heartfelt drama by a sizzling cast, including Kenyan singer, Avril (Miss B'have), Sharon Olago (Violet), David Omwange (Skola), Nick Mutuma (Leo), Antony Mwangi (Kennedy), Valerie Kimani (Sindi), Nick Ndeda (Angelo), Brenda Wairimu (Dala), Edward Nyanaro (Rayban), Christopher Otieno (Slim) and Wairugi Mutero (Njoki).

Nigerian artists Banky W and Wiz Kid both play themselves in the series, performing during emotionally hard-hitting club scenes while Kenya-based Nigerian musician Ikubese Emmanuel - a.k.a. 9con – plays the role of Femi.

Minutely researched, beautifully acted and with stunning cinematography, Shuga: Love, Sex, Money is directed by South African veteran director Teboho Mahlatsi, alongside Kenyan director, Lupita Nyong'o, who also plays a cameo as Ayira.

Shuga: Love, Sex, Money was shot on location in Nairobi and Malindi between August and September 2011. The show will be offered rights-free to other broadcasters around the world in order to spread its message about responsible sexual behaviour and tolerance.

TymeOut Lounge founded by ace comedian, Tunde Adewale a.k.a Tee A is moving from its present location which is in the premise of Ivory Health Club, Ikeja Lagos.

Since 2010, the lounge has been a popular relaxation spot to men and women from the music, banking, oil industry and others.

Regarded as a veteran MC, writer, presenter, comedian and entrepreneur, the University of Lagos graduate has also built a career as an international entertainer; working, through the years on private engagements, big-venue concerts and his own solo show in Lagos, London and the US. He has also built a chain of businesses along the line.

Tee A is the founder-CEO of First Class Entertainment, the Executive Producer of Tymeout With Tee A and host of the Live 'N Naked series.

"The business is bigger, the vision is even much bigger, hence the expansion. We need to move to a bigger property. But we'd still be in the same vicinity", Tee A assures.

MEET THE CHURCHBOIZ

Ernest Umanh (from Akwa Ibom State) and Ignatius Chidi (Anambra State), make up the group called The Churchboiz. Like many talented artists around the world, these guys started from the church, singing as praise and worship leaders. They were also members of a group called ‘The Oracles’, popular in various churches.

The Churchboiz decided to take their art beyond the four walls of the church to reach out to a wider audience like some of their contemporaries like Rooftop MCs, Cobhams, Jahdeil, Lara George, Midnight Crew, Segun Obe, Eben and the likes.

The boys make their debut with “Imela” and “Abasi Ayaya”, 2 singles that have been strategically created and coated with inspiration and anointing that will set spirits high and connect listeners to the Almighty – their source of inspiration; “our music is for everyone”.

Words reaching the Jarmzone says Samuel Oguachuba a.k.a Samklef is presently in 'The Eastern Heartland' (Nigeria) to observe traditional rites and receive blessings to marry his long time girlfriend, Yvonne Iheduru.

While we await other details of the nuptial process, a brief chat with the multi-talented producer/artist confirms his location and intent, "I'm in Imo State for my traditional wedding and it's taking place this Wednesday, December 28".

Samklef is from Enugu State and he's accompanied by family members, a few of his relatives and close friends to observe the traditional wedding rites, holding in his fiancee's father's compound in Imo State.

KEFEE, SET TO HIT CANADA ON TOUR

Few months after dazzling her US fans, singer, Irikefe Obareki popularly known as Kefee is set to hit Canada. Her highly successful sojourn to the US saw her perform alongside Grammy Award-winning artist, India Arie and Tyrese Gibson at The African Festival of Arts held in Chicago.

The Sapele born act will for three weeks, treat fans to live music and super choreographed dances. Her official tour schedule includes performances at Toronto - November 25, Edmonton and Calgary - 3rd and 10th of December respectively.

Speaking on her expectations, she says "we have done it in the US and different countries. Now Canada should get ready to feel Africa through my music".

The UN peace ambassador is also busy working on materials for her next album that is expected to hit record stores in 2012.

NEW MUSIC: "LEGACY" - RILWAN FEAT. DAMMY KRANE

Rilwan Bawa-Bwari, stage name Rilwan is a fast rising star in the Nigeria. Though influenced by Rock Music back in Kings College, the upcoming rapper seeks to bring something new to the music industry, although his sound bends towards the rap spectrum.

Fascinated by the art of Rap, Rilwan started experimenting with words and this led him to be part of a coalition of musicians called Av'lanche Music in 2007. This did not last long as one of the members parted ways and Rilwan chose to remain in the undeground scene until he got spotted by PLAY records, an Abuja based Record Label and came up with his 1st single tagged "Every Night" which he co-produced with the late Sazzy. This song is based on the euphoric experiences faced by every young man and woman in a cold world. As a follow up Rilwan teamed up with label mate BUSH and long time friend LYNXXX to bring to the people a remix for "Every Night" which enjpyed heavy rotation on radio stations and clubs in Lagos and Abuja.

His new single, "Legacy" featuring Dammy Krane has the perfect blend of conscious content and fuji rhythm marinated over an amazing instrumental made by Spanky. The track was mixed by Snowzy in PLAY Records Studio.

CASAP: LENDING A HAND TO THE KIDS

Here at the Jarmzone, we wish to use this medium to introduce - 'Child Adoption & Sponsorship Awareness Project' (CASAP), an initiative that seeks to create awareness for the plight of the Nigerian child with special focus on children in orphanage homes. The aim of the phenomenal cause is to encourage fostering of orphans amongst Nigerians.

The initiative also aims at creating awareness and garnering support for orphans, orphanages and less privileged and physically challenged children.

According Ms. Zainab Yakubu, a principal member of the organization, "to promote our cause, we plan to organize visits to various Orphanage homes and less privileged communities around the country".

The official Launch of CASAP comes up on Sunday November 27, 2011 at 2.00pm. The venue is Living Fountain Orphanage, Plot 22 Yusuff Abiodun Way, Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos.

KIM KARDASHIAN'S SIDE OF THE STORY

This is probably the hardest thing I've ever had to write. I see all of the support and I am so thankful for my fans, friends and family who are helping me through this difficult time.

I am trying not to read all the different media reports but it's hard not to see all the negative ones. First and foremost, I married for love. I can't believe I even have to defend this. I would not have spent so much time on something just for a TV show! I share so much of my life on a reality show, that contemplating whether to even film my wedding was a tough decision to make, and maybe it turned out to not be the smartest decision. But it's who I am! We filmed Kourtney giving birth, Khloe getting married, break ups, make ups, our best moments and our worst moments. These were all real moments. That's what makes us who we are. We share, we give, we love and we are open!

Everyone that knows me knows that I'm a hopeless romantic! I love with all of my heart and soul. I want a family and babies and a real life so badly that maybe I rushed in to something too soon. I believed in love and the dream of what I wanted so badly. I felt like I was on a fast roller coaster and couldn't get off when now I know I probably should have. I got caught up with the hoopla and the filming of the TV show that when I probably should have ended my relationship, I didn't know how to and didn't want to disappoint a lot of people.

I'm being honest here and I hope you respect my courage because this isn't easy to go through. But I do know that I have to follow my heart. I never had the intention of hurting anybody and I accept full responsibility for my actions and decisions, and for taking everyone on this journey with me. It just didn't turn out to be the fairy tale I had so badly hoped for.

There are also reports that I made millions of dollars off of the wedding. These reports are simply not true and it makes me so sad to have to even clarify this. I'm so grateful to everyone who took the time to come to my wedding and I'll be donating the money for all the gifts to the Dream Foundation.

I'm sorry if I have hurt anyone, but my dad always told me to follow my heart and I believe now that I really am.

Loud lumi is an extremely talented and creative Nigerian Artist cum producer and music enthusiast, often described as the new sound and future of Nigerian hip hop.He was born in Lagos where he had both his primary and secondary and tertiary education.

Presently in his 20s, music has always been an integral part of Lumi's life, hence his acclaim as a music maker. He started writing his own rap songs in the late 90's while in secondary school. BENIN, OWERRI STAND STILL FOR MTN POWER OF 10 CONCERT!

Dr Sid, Ikechukwu, Waconzy, Dr Sid, Chidinma, Mike, Raskimono, 9ice, Free Windz and Flavor were star performers in Benin and Owerri last weekend. All thanks to MTN and the ongoing Power of 10 concerts!

The Power of 10 performance train started in Makurdi on September 9, and has since been to cities like Enugu, Calabar, Abuja, Ilorin and Port Harcourt.

Cultural Centre Benin and Aladinma Shopping Complex Owerri played host to the artists, as fans came out in thousands to see some of their favorite acts sing to them all night long. Seyi Law was the host for the night!

The train moves to Ibadan tonight, Friday October 7, 2011 and it's final destination will be Lagos, next week Friday October 14, 2011.

17 finalists emerged out of the 19 contestants that were introduced to the audience for the MTN Project Fame Season 4 while the other two contestants went home from the opening gala night.

The Project Fame academy will train the finalists on the A- Z of the art and business of music, using special in-house coaching and performance as well as external mentors who will take turns to prepare the contestants for a future in the music industry. The contestants are to spend some weeks in boot camp before moving into the academy for proper training.

MTN Project Fame West Africa started in 2008 and has produced some of Nigeria's rising stars like Iyanya, Mike, Chidinma, Praise, Jerrilyn and Ijeoma.

CODREAD AND TERRY G WANT YOU TO "GO CRAZY"

Described As Hot on the runway, even hotter in music. South African based Model cum Singer, Pius 'CodRead' Okaba was nominated at the last edition of the Nigeria Music Video Awards. He was nominated for the 'Patricia' video featuring Buffalo Souljah. He is set to make an impact on the Nigerian Music radar with his new single titled "Go Crazy" featuring Terry G. The new record is already enjoying airplay on radio stations in South Africa.

Codread started making music in 1999 with the moniker, Boldman and in 2000 formed a group with his brother called Beat Block Boys. His kind of music cuts across various genres including reggae/dance-hall with a fusion of pop.

CodRead, born in Lagos but an Obudu, Cross Rivers indigene left Nigeria for South Africa in 2005 to pursue a career on the runway. After three years of enjoying massive attention with “Omo Too Sexy”, Justina Ogunlolu simply known as Justina resurfaces with two intriguing singles titled “So Tempting” (Omo Gbabe) and “Ashikituga”. Both songs, which has already leaked to some radio stations mark a grand come back for the talented singer.

The singer who has been touring around the globe with her international band says she’s not back to ride on past glory. The Nigerian corner at this year's edition of the annual Nottinghill Carnival in London will once again be the centre of attraction as organizers announced new additions to a growing list of performers for the event.

UK based Nigerian comic; Wale Gates and musician JJC have been announced as the new set of acts that will be flying the Nigerian flag at this year's edition of the world-famous street carnival.

The duo will be joining DJ Jimmy Jatt, Eldee Tha Don, Tee A, and other
heavyweights in the Nigeria entertainment circle to add colour to the
event.

Organizers of the annual gig – Sodium Brand Solutions only recently announced a line up of A-list stars and entertainers to feature in this year's edition and gave a promise to announce more acts later.

Speaking on this year's edition, Principal Consultant of Sodium Brands Solutions – Abisoye Fagade said "Since securing the rights to host the only official Naija Corner at the Nottinghill Carnival, people have asked me several times: why Nottinghill? And my answer is simple: Why not? This is one of the oldest running carnivals in the world; the second most popular. RE-INTRODUCING IJEOMA FROM MTNPFWA ’08

IJEOMA was first spotted on stage at MTN Project Fame 2008 where she vocally competed with other talented singers across Nigeria and West Africa. She may not have won the competition but it has not made her less of a gifted singer. Today (August 17), she debuts with “Oloomi” (My Love), a song that speak volumes of why she was picked for the competition in the first place.

“Oloomi”, as rendered by Ijeoma was written by Harrysong and produced by Del B. It is not just a love song – it is a story that will take lovers back to the drawing board. It is a song that calls for reconciliation and reassurance. Listeners will not only relate to this song, they will also commend the Imo State born singer for a job well done.

Recalling her experience at Project Fame, she says “it was more than a competition for me. It wasn’t just about singing someone’s song and getting judged, it was basically about having your own songs at the end of the day and the experience I got from the show has actually made the ladder to the top a little shorter for me”

Full names Ijeoma Daisy Okwara, has a degree in English Language from Abia State University. She presently works part-time with a telecommunication company in Lagos but channels the rest of her time to the studio. Challenging as it may seem, she still pulls it off on this debut and many other songs that will be released to the public later. In her words, “Music gives me joy. It makes me look beyond my challenges.”

She is signed to Dudutoonz Studios as a brand ambassador for the multimedia company that is also responsible for her brand, perception and quality control.

MTV BASE MEETS… HUGH MASEKELA… WITH MTN

The latest edition of MTV Base Meets…with MTN (MTV Base, Monday 22 August, 20:30 CAT) sees young African creatives in conversation with legendary musician Hugh Masekela.

Many albums, hits and live performances all over the world later, at 72, Masekela still has an extremely active music career and is in touch with the latest music trends (he’s worked with Black Coffee, Lira, Zwai Bala, Thandiswa Mazwai). He had plenty to say about politics, music and African heritage in his chat at Johannesburg’s Scenic Moyo restaurant at Zoo Lake.

Bra Hugh, as he is affectionately known, picked up his first trumpet at 14 and was part of the legendary Sophiatown era in South Africa, before going into exile in America; living in West Africa; touring the world and releasing countless international hits including his Grammy nominated 1968 US number 1 Grazing In The Grass. Hugh’s voice and music were instrumental in the struggle against Apartheid, and he returned from exile after Nelson Mandela’s 90s release from jail. In 2003 he released his best-selling autobiography Still Grazing: The Musical Journey of Hugh Masekela, which covered his loves, including ex wife Miriam Makeba, his drug and alcohol addiction and being a musician.

Engaging with Masekela on MTV Base Meets…with MTN are Zimbabwean rapper Zubz, South African blogger, columnist and fashion store owner Milisuthando Bongela, Nigerian musician Adey Omotade, South African standup comedian and student Mojak Lehoko and Congolese stylist and journalism student Patricia Muauka Muembo.

In each episode of MTV Base Meets…with MTN, African youth get to meet face to face with the influencers and leaders of Africa and ask them probing and provocative questions. It’s a no-holds-barred interview with politicians and prominent figures such as UK businessman Richard Branson, Nigerian media mogul Ben Murray Bruce, South African politician Julius Malema, Liberian President Madame Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

HENNESSY ARTISTRY ENTERS YEAR FIVE

After a successful edition last year, the organizers of Hennessy Artistry are already putting finishing touches to this year's edition to make it 'bigger and better'. Jarmzone was told some high profile names in the music industry have already been short-listed for Hennessy Artistry 2011 and that the grand VIP events characteristic of the exciting annual project are already in the works.

According to Tokini Peterside, the Communication Manager of Hennessy in Nigeria, "This year's Hennessy Artistry is going to surpass the previous years. We're working with some of the best urban music artists in Nigeria today, and we shall announce officially the participating artists soon."

Last year Hennessy Artistry was tagged the 'Like a Bottle' experience, and was a three-part collaboration project featuring Nneka, M.I, Bez, Ice Prince and Shina Peters. The diverse group of Nigerian musicians came together to compose, record and perform a song titled 'Like a Bottle' which was produced by Kas. The artists also took part in a music video and headlined a Grand Finale concert held at the GET Arena, Lagos.

Hennessy Artistry started in Nigeria in 2007 as a cocktail-mixing contest among bartenders. Since then it has evolved into a platform where the vibrant multiculturalism of different music genres and style is celebrated.

In 2009, Ice Prince emerged the winner in a live band contest put together by Hennessy, which pitched him against talents like Mo'cheddah, Bez, Blaise and Jimmy Flames.

The Hennessy Artistry initiative was established by the world famous French cognac manufacturers, Hennessy. It is a famed global music campaign that promotes the art of mixing various genres and blending the talents of the world's best artistes. It's about pure unification: mixing sound, visual innovation and the premium Hennessy cognac experiences in different countries around the world.

"Hennessy Cognac started Hennessy Artistry as a means of celebrating urban music culture. It is also an initiative that allows us to reward consumers of the brand with access to entertaining projects in the music space" says Tokini Peterside.

Hennessy Artistry 2011 will officially start this August with the organizers announcing the artists who are going to be involved in this year's edition any time soon.

HAS D’ACCORD BROKEN UP?

Members of D’Accord, winners of Star Quest 2006 may be going their separate ways soon. Jarmzone caught up with one of the boys, Richard Francis a.k.a Richie to know what the band has been up to and he says, “Everybody is fine… I am trying to bag a degree (from the University of Lagos) but I want to do something on my own”.

Responding to whether they were still recording, he says, “you know how the group thing is; not everyone has got that drive”.

You may recall that one of the boys, Tkeys released two singles “Padawale” and “Lau Lau” ahead of his solo album, ‘Experiment’ but the impact weighs as much as an average music follower can tell.

With the rate at which Nigeria’s music is going, is it possible for any group to survive if they are not brothers like P-Square or a duo like Don Jazzy and D’banj?

D’Accord has only one album ‘Much 2 Much’ (2008) which made no significant impact, the 4-man band, which is what is left of the initial six, may be at the verge of final breakup if they’ve not broken up already.

Her influences include the likes of Pink, Eminem, Lil Wayne, 2Face Idibia, Zeal and Ghanaian singer, Becca.

Highlife star, Chinedu Okoli a.k.a Flavour has debunked 'breach of contract' claims by his label, Badbeats Records. According to the report, Flavour approached Mr. Anderson Obiagwu and Mr. Igwe Odelugo (owners of Badbeats Records) while on tour in the United States of America in November 2010, requesting that they invest in him as a potential brand. A 3-year, 2 albums contract was drafted and signed attached with a posh 7 bedroom apartment at Magodo, a Toyota Avalon car, a professional photo session in South Africa and total artiste make over from looks to wardrobe as well as other benefits to make the fast rising artist comfortable.

Contrary to the above, Flavour told Jarmzone - "I have no contract with Anderson, just an MOU with Mr. Odelugo. The contract was to take effect from my next album. I have no sign on fee, no house as promised and no car, which were my requirements for the commencement of the deal".

Responding to how he met Mr. Odelugo and Anderson Obiagwu, Flavour said, "After my performance in Houston, last year, I met with Igwe Odelugo who still is a good friend of mine; we rubbed minds and he showed interest in building up a music powerhouse which I advised would be a good step due to his passion and financial strength. Anderson is Igwe's boy who was later introduced to me in Nigeria as Igwe's assistant because of Igwe's tight business affairs in the USA".

In the press statement release last week, the label said that it rebranded Flavour with a view to marketing him as an international artiste of class; they shot two videos "My Woman Is Gone" (in New York) and "Nwa Baby" (in South Africa). The service of a personal publicist was also employed to further propel the artist to an enviable position of reckoning.

"I decided to give them a huge percentage of my earnings because they assisted in the shooting of my video. I realized they are amateurs and lack the capacity needed. So I opted out, they have no office they don't give me shows and they failed in their responsibilities so many times", Flavour responds.

Speaking on the challenge on the deal with Badbeats Records, Flavour says, "I thank God because everything I am today is by God's grace, and my loyal fans. My two albums were financed by me and me alone. Badbeats has done nothing for me, just paying the press to say they have signed me and given me heaven and earth. I noticed their selfish interest on time so I called everything off. They failed in their promise for a car, a house and sign on fee. They haven't given me a single show and they have collected 60 percent of over 15 shows within and outside Nigeria. I thought with time they will stabilize but with the selfishness of Anderson involved, I seriously doubted their future. I just want to be by myself like before".

Asking if there was an attempt to be civil about the issues by both parties talking about it, Flavour says, "the issue is not money or fame; it's the mindset of the people you are working with. I still have a healthy relationship with Igwe but I'd rather be by myself and focus on my music not people".

Flavour confirms to be working on his third album; however, it will not be released on Badbeats Records. "Do not believe everything you read. I want to thank my fans because before Badbeats they made me famous and okay, after Badbeats, Oringo continues after all", he says.

DRUMMER GIRL, ARA AND HUSBAND PART WAYS

Drummer girl Ara has issued a statement, saying she's parting with her husband Prince Nurudeen Olalekan Saliu who she married on June 4, 2009. The pair will remain friends, she says. However, they will continue to jointly support their child.

"We've been separated since January", Ara says. "But because I do not want rumours to start flying, and I think, out of respect, all my friends and fans need to know what's happening to me, I think
it's right to set the records straight once and for all on this. We're no longer together and we're both happy. We've both moved on.

"I'm single again. But I will not be searching for now. I've taken this decision very painfully; and it's particularly a tough and sensitive time for me and my son. And I plead with my friends and fans to put us in their prayers at this period".

The musician who is working to release her new materials, while also dedicating her time to helping disadvantaged women and children, says she will not be granting any interviews for now. "I want to give my son all the attention he needs; and when I do have to talk, it'll be about my current love : My music".

MTV Networks Africa and Silverbird Television are joining forces to up the fun ante, by introducing an intense new Nigerian 'flava' to their early-evening programme line-up.

Starting July 2011, MTV Base and STV will introduce a series of brand new, co produced TV shows on their 18:00 - 19:00 block, airing Mondays to Saturdays. The shows will include a host of Nigerian themed music and lifestyle programmes and the partners' first ever Friday night entertainment show, to be filmed on location in STV's Lagos studios.

The new-look MTV Base block on STV will include The Official Club Chart (a weekly Nigerian club chart mixed by top Nigerian DJs) and Street Request, a weekly request show that will see MTV camera crews invading various Lagos hot-spots to ask viewers to select their hottest songs.

Tuesday nights will welcome the return of MTV Base quiz show Base.IQ, the ultimate pro-am test of music knowledge, while Wednesday evenings will see the makeover of MTV's famous format MVP (Most Voted Playlist), with a purely Naija twist - as viewers take over the programming reins to choose their favourite Nigerian music videos.

One of the activities that were held ahead of the ongoing Under 20 Female World Cup is the Miss World Cup Beauty Pageant. Gorgeous Miss Jane Ogbe (former Miss International 2007), represented Nigeria and emerged Second Runner-up at the competition. The event was held last Friday June 17, 2011 in Germany and had beauty queens from different parts of the world in contention.

Tracing Jane's career, we see a young girl who started as a video girl, to a professional runway model for various fashion shows including Omoyemi Akerele & Odion (2006) and Linda Ikeji's Fashion Show (2007). Her first attempt to beauty pageantry was Miss Earth 2007 where she emerged First Runner-up and crowned Miss International 2007. According to her, this competition really gave her exposure and several opportunities like representing Nigeria at the Miss Globe International Beauty Pageant 2007 in Albania where she got the title – Miss Cosmopolitan and a Diplomat certificate from the Mayor of Tropoja. She was also part of the seven contestants whose pictures were used to represent the continents of the world in a TV advert for Albania's historical postal stamps.

In 2009, Jane represented Nigeria at The Queens Of the World Contest in Berlin – an experience that re-invited her to partake at the Miss World Cup Beauty Pageant this year. A BABY BOY FOR SOUND SULTAN

Gifted artist, Olanrewaju Fasasi aka Sound Sultan and his wife Farida welcomed their second child – a bouncing baby boy this (Sunday) morning. The baby was born in a Festac Town located hospital at exactly 11:45am (an hour after his wife went into labour). The artist confirms that both mother and child are doing great.

The bundle of joy that will be named in seven days arrives a year and eight months after the couple’s first child, named Zara. According to Sultan, “Zara is gradually getting a grip of what just happened”. Further commenting, a very excited Sultan says “God is great. The birth of my son is a sign of great blessings to come”.

Sound Sultan is one talented artist who has spent well over a decade in Nigeria’s music industry and still counting. His first single “Jagbajantis” led to his debut album ‘KPSHHEW’ (hiss or sound made by a frustrated person) released in 1999. This song and many others endeared him to fans and music pundits across Nigeria. Ever since, the dark and tall gentleman has dished 5 great albums; the recent being ‘Back To The Future’ (January 20, 2011) with hit songs like “2010” ft. M.I, “Very Good Bad Guy” ft. THE HEADIES ANNOUNCE HOSTS

Organizers of the Headies today revealed that talented actress Rita Dominic and contemporary producer and rapper eLDee will host the sixth edition of the hugely- anticipated event.

Executive Producer Ayo Animashaun made it public this week that the award's committee has brought the duo on board. "Eldee and Rita Dominic will be hosting this year's awards and we are proud to be working with such exceptional talents" he said in a statement issued early this week.

He also announced that this year's awards will hold in September instead of its usual date in May due to the election process which was pivotal to the entire well being and sustenance of the Nigerian society.

The awards which started in 2006, has fast become one of the top events occupying the music industry's calendar. The ceremony is known for its innovative and trail blazing concepts which have single-handedly revolutionized the approach and manner award shows are organized and structured in the country. And this year's edition comes with a whole lot of surprises Mr Animashaun says "We are making adequate preparations that this year's awards be bigger and better than the previous years" he says adding "you don't want to imagine what we're cooking this year". He continues "If there is any gospel the award has preached over the years, it is the power of Possibilities".

Meanwhile, Rita Dominic and eLDee have kicked off a series of meetings with the awards committee. "I feel really excited about hosting this year's awards. I love the music industry, and I appreciate the fact that The Headies is one of the initiatives that sees to appreciating deserving talents. The team is well organized, and I am already bonding with eLDee. Last week, we were at a photo shoot organized by the organizers and I had so much fun" Rita Dominic says. She has an unrepentant love for the Entertainment industry and she has starred in over 100 movies since she started her career in 1998.

Paired with Rita Dominic to take the audience through this year's event is Osun State born Lanre Dabiri popularly known as eLDee. He is an original member of the band Trybesmen with four albums to his credit and a force to reckon with. "I have been to so many editions of The Headies, and I feel really honored hosting this year's show. Rita Dominic is a good actress and I like the fact that the organizers scout for hosts from different sectors of the Entertainment industry" eLDee says.

Past hosts of The Headies include Darey (2006), Dbanj and Tana (2007), Dakore and Basket Mouth (2008), Banky W and Kemi Adetiba (2009).

WIZKID’S ‘SUPER STAR’ ALBUM REVIEW

First, Wizkid’s promotion team deserves a standing ovation for a job well done on his album release concert on June 12 at Eko Hotel. They did not do that much to loud the album release on Friday June 10 yet the streets looked forward to it. If post record sales were functional in Nigeria, SUPER STAR would have sold out before the copies arrive.

I got the album as soon as my vendor got it off Uba Pacific (marketers of the album) on the release date. Most people do not pay attention to album sleeves, well I do and I think it should have been better – from the concept, photography to the design.

On the inside - SUPER STAR… not a creative title for an album yet it fits the artist in question. For many fans, Wizkid strikes as one up and coming artist who hit limelight from nowhere but on the contrary, this ‘Kid’ has been around for a while and has gone through

the hard process of survival in an industry that lacks basic structure.

In my opinion, SUPER STAR by Wizkid is an easy album to review. Start by separating the earlier released singles and the other songs on the album to find the contrast. The choice of the promoted singles: “Don’t Dull”, “Tease Me” and “Holler At Your Boy” was quite genius because they were certified hits which made him a superstar already. I don’t see any other song on the album growing bigger than the mentioned songs. Although tracks like “Say My Name”, “Pakurumo”, and “Wad Up” comes close but not enough to drown any of the latter. On a second thought, listeners’ perception varies so it’s up to you.

Weighing Wizkid’s energy on this project, I see a jolly good fellow, who is just having fun with the flow. He goes a bit sentimental on “Oluwa Lo Ni” and touches his roots in “Wad Up”. His lyrics are basic…not in a bad way but makes communication as direct as possible. Not a lot of artists were featured on the album but the featured acts: Banky W, Skales, Wande Coal and D’Prince were outstanding.

There is no ‘wow factor’ on the complete production of the album, and I direct this concern to the record label. Efforts should have been made to help Wizkid make more sustainable music than just spur of the moment songs. However, their approach may have been intentional based on their survey and target audience but Nigeria’s music is fast growing beyond that. I’m saying if I lose a copy of the album, I might not have to buy another.

In conclusion, Wizkid’s ‘SUPERSTAR’ is not a bad debut but the attraction remains the earlier promoted singles. I won’t be surprised if some fans are disappointed already but then again, some songs/albums will have to grow on some listeners.

OBI ASIKA: RE-VISITING AN ICON'S PROFILE

Obi Asika was born in Lagos, (Island Maternity Home, State House) on the 3rd of October 1968. He hails from Onitsha, Anambra State, South-East of Nigeria. His father, late Dr Ajie Ukpabi Asika was Intellectual, Academic, and Administrator of former East Central State of Nigeria which covered all 5 the Ibo States from 1968 to 1975. Late Ajie Lived and Died for Nigeria.

His mother, Chief Mrs. Chinyere Asika is the former Presidential Adviser, NEPAD 2002-2007 and now Chairperson, Africa Peer Review Mechanism for Nigeria.

Young Obi attended the famous Ekulu Primary School, Enugu and then moved to Ashdown House, a school in England. His education continued in Eton College and from there to the University of Warwick where he studied law before coming to the Nigerian Law School to enable him practice in Nigeria. After his final graduation, he went to work as a legal analyst and later as an investment analyst.

Mr Asika has been practicing the Hip Hop culture since 1979; the same year he bought his first Hip Hop Record, ‘Planet Rock’ by Afrika Bambaataa. His love for music pushed him into record collection which later transformed him into a Disk Jockey. He was host and DJ of a popular radio show for University of Warwick Campus Radio and later a co-promoter of the Gatecrasher Balls, a series of party nights aimed at teenagers in schools around UK in 1984.

He was also co-promoter of “Biology”, a massive rave event showcasing the hottest UK and US Hip-Hop and R&B acts, including Public Enemy, De La Soul, Alyson Williams and 3rd Bass in 1989. The event was partnered with Russell Simmons’ Def Jam and RUSH Artists Management, New York. Obi was involved in all aspects of finance, marketing, conceptualization and logistics for the event, which sold over 40,000 tickets.

In a bid to channel his passion for music into his motherland, Obi returned to Nigeria in 1991 to join forces with his childhood friend and cousin, Olisa Adibua to conceive Storm Records in. Storm kicked off officially in 1992, and signed three artists through the Clapperboard Rap Show – a STORM initiative that was on 30 National TV Stations for over a year.

According to Obi, the military era did not give room for creativity and music expression and this discouraged him from the music business in 1993. He decided to set up an oil servicing company in the same year and concentrated on another wing of Storm Entertainment, which is event packaging. This got him involved with soccer, a game he loves very much and is financially committed to. His Storm management was part of the organizers of the World Youths Soccer Championship in 1999 as well as the Cup of Nations in 2000.

In 2004, with constructive pressure from Eldee Tha Don, Obi joined forces with Olisa Adibua to re-launch STORM Records, joining the metamorphosis and revolution of the Nigerian Music Industry. The rebound saw the sign up of artistes like Jazzman Olofin whose debut solo album, ‘Boiling Point’ was released in the same year. Dare Art Alade dropped his debut album titled ‘From Me2U’ in 2005. 2Shotz came on board in 2005, to release his third solo album ‘Commercial Avenue’ in 2006.

Ikechukwu is still thankful to Obi for his earnest supports, which led to the sign up and release of his debut album ‘Son of the Soil’ in 2006. The fire did not stop there - Yetunde Alabi also known as Sasha unveiled her album, ‘First Lady’ after several years with the credit to Obi Asika’s led Storm Records. The roll-call also includes GT the Guitar Man, Naeto C, Saucekid and remember - DJ Jimmy Jatt’s historic 'Definition' Album was released on the platform of Storm Records.

Obi's doggedness has kept him afloat and outstanding in Nigeria’s music and Africa's entertainment industry, this is why he is undoubtedly an entity to recon with. He married his long time girlfriend Yetunde (Bakare) on November 27, 2009 and recently (Thursday, May 26, 2011) they were blessed with a bouncing baby girl named Anulika Ayomikun Asika aka Triple A and with the hereditary title Kpari (princess of the royal umuezearoli clan of Onitsha-ado).

LINEO BURIES LATE MUM NEXT WEEK

Friends and fans of Lineo will be interested to know that next week Thursday (2nd) and Friday (3rd) of June have been set aside to finally lay the entertainer's late mum to rest. The venue will be their home town - Omu, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

Weeks after Ayeni Adekunle (Publisher of Net Newspaper) lost his Dad at 67, fast rising entertainer, Adekoya Adegboyega a.k.a Lineo also lost his mother Olushola Adekoya. The sad incident happened on Friday, May 20, 2011.

According to Lineo, his mother who had shown little sign of illness died in her sleep at her Ijebu-Ode residence in Ogun State. She was 61 years old.

Speaking to The Jarmzone, Lineo said he went to see her on Monday, May 16, and returned to Lagos the next day. The visit turned out to be a farewell meeting than a regular visit.

"It came as a shock to me because I was with her a few days before. We were gisting and sharing jokes. We prayed together, I won't forget when I looked back, and she waved bye bye. She was loved by everyone, she was a mother of all, she even stood by my friend who lost his mum, I will surely miss her forever because she was 100 percent supportive of my music", sad Lineo explains.

Lineo comes from a polygamous home. His father who died 15 years ago married 12 wives, making the young rapper one of his 40 children. He dropped out of school to pursue music but he has re-applied to continue at the Ogun State University where he will be studying Mass Communication.

His single "Show Me The Money" ft. Dagrin is getting appealing attention on radio and TV, while "Feel It" ft. 2Face gets impressive online downloads on a daily.

P-SQUARE’S “BUNIEYA ENU” AND “FOREVER”

Guys, please what about the Okoye twins would you like to know at this point that has not been said? Is it about their dancing days as ‘Smooth Criminals’ or as an acapella group with their friends Michael and Melvin – MMPP which didn’t last? Is it about how they became P-Square, a name they adopted in their first year in Uni-Abuja…or about how they emerged winners of Benson & Hedges Golden Tones competition in 2001? Ok, you don’t know where they’re from? - Anambra State, South-East of Nigeria but born and bred in Jos on the 18th of November, 1979. Their awards are too numerous to mention, and for their discography…. I’ll give you a synopsis but let me tell you what I think about their new singles “Bunieya Enu” and “Forever”.

As an Ibo boy, “Bunieya Enu” I know, means “Lift Him (God) High” and how groovy can a song get? P-Square did justice to this song from the jumpy beat, the fluid flow to the sing-along hook. A careless listener will not bother about the meaning of the few Ibo lines in this song. “Bunieya Enu” is eudemonic joint…the type that will get you dancing from the beginning to the end.

Remember that song “I Really Like It” by Harlem World and Mase back in 1999? Well, “Forever” brings memories of it and gives me that “Ifunanya” chills; it’s a love song – the type you wanna play for that special lady that makes you sleep at work cos you stayed awake all night thinking of her. The beat is not the conventional R&B but the lyrical content puts it in and not limited to that class. You can still dance to “Forever” the same way the DJ would cue it right after “Bunieya Enu”.

After these singles, expect a video and their next album simultaneously from P-Square. Anything different, would mean, the twins have changed their strategy of 8 years.

They released their first album ‘Last Night’ in 2003 an album that featured hit songs “Kolo” and “Senorita”. Their sophomore effort ‘Get Squared’ was released in July 2005. The album had songs like “Temptation”, “Bizzy Body”, “Get Squared” and “Temptation Remix” featuring UK based Alaye.

Their third album ‘Game Over’ (November 2007) housed fab songs like “Ifunanya”, “Role it”, “No one like you” and “Do me”. The album blew minds and stunned pundits.

In conclusion, I’ll like to ask, which African duo is hotter than P-Square? Keep thinking… you might have an answer in decades to come…

Hollywood movies such as THOR and the PRIEST would herald the launch of the 3D technology on Friday May 13, 2011 at the Silverbird Cinemas on Victoria Island.

According to Mr Taiwo Oke, Business Manager, Silverbird Cinemas, Nigeria, the cinema management has spent a huge sum of money to get only the latest and the best of 3D technology.

A 3D cinema, he said cost 10 times more to put up than an conventional cinema, and an entire cinema hall had to be renovated to install the 3D Hi-tech.

Silverbird Cinemas is kicking off the 3D invasion with the Lagos cinema and very soon will create the the same experience for their movie loving customers at their cinemas in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ghana and recently, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The media brief which started at 10.00am shared actual details of the rumoured relationship between MTV Networks Africa and telecoms giant, MTN. Both companies have joined forces in a groundbreaking pan-African multimedia campaign designed to inspire African youth by connecting them with some of the world’s most influential personalities.

It is no longer news that young people in Nigeria, Africa and the world over are gradually taking interest in national and global affairs, and increasingly becoming vocal on matters that affect them and the world they live in.

West African Idols’ Jerrilyn is Back!

Former West African Idol contestant, Jerrilyn Mulbah is set to release her debut singles this weekend after her first public appearance in 2007.

Idols came to Nigeria in 2007 for the first time and Mulbah, a Liberian, was part of the talents that participated in the popular
competition. Beating the odds and scaling through each stage of the televised competition, she successfully made it to the top five phase of the show. Her choice of song for her final performance was
Christina Aguilera's "The Voice Within," an appropriate song title, a true metaphor describing the angel that was speaking inside of Jerrilyn.

The competition produced some of Nigeria's renowned artistes, like Timi Dakolo who emerged winner at the competition and Omawumi who has become a successful bestselling artiste and multi- award winner.
Despite not actually winning the competition, Jerrilyn was extremely overjoyed by the experience. She found a new light that could not be extinguished and her career has remained vigorous ever since.

Jerrilyn Mulbah's history as a child depicts the saying "from grass to grace". She was sold as a child in return for "fish" by her mother's friend to a rebel general. She was reunited with her devastated family two years later. After discovering that her step-father sexually abused her, her mother moved with an early pregnant Jerrilyn to
Nigeria.

The year 2003 was a very trying period for Jerrilyn as she was finding it difficult to adapt to her new environment. She also experienced a hard time; battling with acceptance, and plotting her desired future,
after she got pregnant in a relationship that soon collapsed. It took her mother, and the love of music, for her to cope with the tragedy of her separation from the father of her unborn child and there were more
tragedies on the way: She would later lose her mother due to an overdose of drugs administered by the hospital she was admitted in. Jerrilyn gave birth to her daughter, Kadisa four days after her mother's death and moved to Calabar, Cross River state to live with family friends.

Early this week, the former Liberian refugee and mother of one spoke out for the first time in years. "I have been through a lot of trials in my life. During West African Idols, people tried to bring me down. I've seen disappointment from friends, family and partners. But God has seen me through all. I am moving on and up and now ready to release my debut singles titled "Molejo" and "Mr DJ".

Jerrilyn's road to fame began with her singing an Ode to her late mother and her
greatest wish is to empower the African woman through her music and honor the memory of her late mum by helping others.

"I have worked very hard towards the success of these songs and I am very excited that they are going to be released after a long time since West African Idols and with these songs making waves in the industry; I want to let my fans know that Jerrilyn is here to stay!" an excited Jerrilyn says.

As a tool for change, Jerrilyn's music is enabling her to inspire and empower young women like herself, who have been through similar circumstances to stand for something so that they don't fall for just
anything. Her amazing life story has allowed numerous women, especially those indigenous to Africa, to value their own lives in every way possible.

Making the best out of the platform that "Idols" has offered, Jerrilyn was one of the four co-hosts on a 15 channel syndicated radio program called Zain Hit Zone. Her new singles, "Molejo" and "Mr DJ" were produced by Kiss Music Studios by Meka E. The songs were written by Jerrilyn and Dipo Abdul for Miss Dynamite Entertainment.

Aberdeen Court Clears Sammie Okposo of Making Racist Remarks

One of Africa's leading gospel star, Sammie Okposo has been cleared of making racist comments in an Aberdeen Restaurant during his honeymoon last year. Okposo was discharged and acquitted of all charges on April 8, 2011 at exactly 11.30am (U.K time) by the presiding judge in Aberdeen court. The judge said all evidences brought against him are insufficient, incoherent and baseless.

The most surprising aspect of the court preceedings was that Okposo wasn’t called upon at any time by the judge to step into the witness box. The judge pronounced his judgement after Okposo’s lawyer, Ms Val Bremmer from Mackie and Dewar Solicitors cross examined the manager and the assistant manager of Jimmy Chung Restaurant and discovered that their testimonies were incoherent.

The statements of both the manager and the assistant manager of the restaurant at the court room were different from their previous statements made last year. The same restaurant manager that accused Sammie Okposo of being violent lost his temper in the court during the cross examination by the defence counsel. He was however cautioned by the judge.

Speaking on his victory over the court case when he returned to Nigeria, Okposo said God has vindicated him. “The Bible says no weapon formed against me shall prosper and every tongue that rises up against me in judgement He shall condemn. How can two people who have been working together in court for ten years confuse themselves in court? I give God all the glory that I have been vindicated and my name was not soiled”.

This is the first time Okposo will ever be involved in a court case over the past two decades that he has been travelling round the world for musical concerts and other engagements.

Okposo was alleged to have caused alarm or distress to Ronny Shui Hung Yung by shouting, swearing and uttering racial remarks at the Aberdeen restaurant last year during his honeymoon. He was also accused of acting in a racially aggravated manner by Scottish Evening Express. Against the ethics of journalism, the paper published the story based on the reports of the restaurant’s manager, whose unprofessional conduct has greatly been criticized, without listening to the other party and the eye witnesses.

The eye witness accounts said the singer with his wife and another couple arrived at the restaurant at exactly 4.30pm in the evening but were not aware that lunchtime ends by 5pm. This led to an argument while the attendant was trying to hurry them out of the restaurant. Witnesses said they questioned the attendant why she had not informed them when they arrived, saying they would probably have waited till 5pm before settling down in the restaurant. An argument later ensued between Sammie Okposo and the manager of the restaurant identified as Mr Ronny Shui Hung Yung over their poor customer service and for harassing his wife urging him to get another job if he is tired of running the restuarant. The manager later called the police that a racist statement had been made against him and when the police reportedly arrived at the scene 30mins after, they arrested Sammie Okposo without any interrogation.

Sammie Okposo’s lawyer in Nigeria, Valentine Emeka Utulu of Johnson Bryant immediately raised a case of personal harassment and aggravation against the restaurant management and the violation of his human rights by the Aberdeen police. The lawyer petitioned the First Minister of Scotland (Minister of Justice) over the unlawful arrest of Okposo. The lawyer copied so many influential individuals like the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, The Queen of England, The Prime Minister of Great Britain, The Secretary General of The United Nations, The Nigerian Ambassador to The United Kingdom, The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Solicitor to The Advocate General of Scotland and The Chairman Federal House of Representatives Committee on Nigerians in the Diaspora.

DAGRIN... A YEAR AFTER

I must confess that I didn't know the right words to use all day, and this has caused the delay of this post, dedicated in loving memory of Dagrin.

I can't really remember the first time I met Dagrin, but I remember when he came to my office (Hip-hop World Magazine) at Ogundana, off Allen with his friend, Lala who was then, signed to Sati Records. They brought two promo CDs - "Nla", a song by Lala featuring Dagrin and "Slow Slow" by Chuddy K. Both songs are still on my list of favourite songs. Well I didn't see for a while but once, he calls me to say what's up and reminded me not to forget him in any project that may concern him. I also remember when "Pon Pon Pon" was released, he had told me he was coming up with some 50 Cents grimy sh*t, produced by Sossick. He didn't bring the CD to me himself, DJ Neptune did. I remember Neptune asking me if I have heard Dagrin's new single, I said yes but not closely... he gave me a copy and to other guys in my office at the time.

I remember when a colleague's brother was marking his birthday at Oniru Beach. She told me Dagrin was the guy's favourite artiste and he'll be very happy to see him at his party. I called Dagrin to know if he was available to hangout that weekend and he said yes. His song, "Pon Pon Pon" was big then, and I'm sure my colleague's brother will never forget that day, like me and a lot of peops at that party.

I still remember the last time I saw Dagrin...Wednesday, April 14, around 3 in the afternoon... hours before the ghastly auto-crash that led him to his early grave. It wasn't too long after he bought his Nissan Maxima. I was teasing him about it, calling him a "Big Boy" while he smiled humbly and blushed in response.

As I gathered then – He was on his way back from an assignment. We got a tip off that he was involved in an accident. We called his manager, Tunde immediately to confirm the story. Tunde concealed information at first, saying it was just a minor accident, "I was in the car with him and a truck driver mistakenly hit his car and damaged his fender but everything is okay now" was Tunde's initial response. However, rumours describing the magnitude of the accident spread further and this compelled us to pressurize his manager who eventually admitted and confirmed the accident.

Dagrin was alone and on his way home (Sunshine Estate, Oko-oba, Agege), after receiving a call that he had a guest waiting for him. We gathered that he kept calling his house asking them not to lock the gate that he was on his way back. Time check relays that he actually ran into a stationary truck 2 minutes after the call and this was around 2am, in front of Alakara Police Station, off Agege Motor road, Mushin, Lagos.

Eyewitness revealed that, minutes before the accident, the truck driver who was carrying cement was negotiating a request of N12, 000 by the men of the police force when they heard a loud bang.

Dagrin was initially rushed to Tai Solarin Hospital (Baba Olosha Bus stop, Mushin), but later transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba at the intensive care unit.

Four days later, we gathered that the rapper had undergone surgery and moved to a private wing of the hospital. In between this time frame, rumours spread that the rapper had died but close friends refuted the information stating individual testimonies of seeing and having a word with him at the hospital. Tunde, his manager also granted an interview on TV, confirming that the young dude was responding to treatment and fast recuperating.

We gathered that the rapper had to be tied to the bed because he kept making efforts to move, each time he recognized any of his guests.

Crisis started in the early hours of Thursday, April 22 when the rapper went into coma again. His heart reportedly stopped beating later as the doctors ran helter-skelter to revive him. The recuperating machine was used 9 times on him but to no avail. He died.

Dagrin, full name Olaitan Oladapo Olaonipekun officially started his music career in 2006 with an album titled 'Still On The Matter'. The most popular track off the album was "Rap Rules Anthem" but it was not big enough to register the album as a success.

His sophomore album, "C.E.O" (Chief Executive Omoita), released in 2009, housed hits like "Pon Pon Pon", "Kondo", "Gboro" and "Ghetto Dreams". This album placed him on the path to the top, as he became one of the hottest and most wanted artistes.

His first album was released on the axis of LEO Entertainment while C.E.O was released on his indie label called Missofunyin Entertainment but he later signed a managerial contract with Edlyne Records.

Dagrin died at the age of 26 as confirmed by his father who also signed the official press release earlier released by Black House Media.

Dagrin departed at a time he was supposed to reap the fruit of his hustle in this hard industry of ours… but his legacy remains.

You know his several nick names…you know his songs…some of you knew his pain…you know what it is…but he knew what it was.

Below is my last interview with the late rapper…

Jarmzone: Did you make any resolution in 2009 and what is the state of your resolutions in terms of achieving them?
Dagrin: Yeah, I made a resolution this year that I'm gonna drop my much anticipated album and I'm grateful to God that I've been able to do that successfully.

Jarmzone: What is the fondest memory, you have of this season?
Dagrin: My fondest memory this year is still about my latest album, I'm fulfilled.

Jarmzone: What is the thing you dearly hope for in 2010?
Dagrin: Hmmm… I hope to work with more artistes in Nigeria and I'm also hoping to work with the likes of 50 cent and Lil' Wayne

Jarmzone: If Santa ask you to state specifically as possible, what you want for Xmas, what would it be?
Dagrin: Haaaaaa… that should be…. To have more rhymes and word play to rap with

Jarmzone: If you were going to give Jesus a birthday present, what would it be?
Dagrin: I'm going to rap for Jesus and also let him know that I really appreciate what he has done with my life

Jarmzone: Rate this year on a scale 1 – 10?
Dagrin: I'll rate it 5/10, because things are not working as we planned. The global recession really affected a lot of thing, but we still thank God.

Jarmzone: Where would you be on new years' eve?
Dagrin: I'll definitely be jamming with my hommies and after that praise and thank God for a 2009 well spent

Jarmzone: How do you plan to make the world or this part of the world at least a better place in 2010?
Dagrin: My plan is to change the rap industry and let people embrace our local dialect and also to let the whack emceez know that there is no hiding place for them.

Jarmzone: Any regret in 2009?
Dagrin: I don't have any regret, so far.

Jarmzone: What will you not be caught doing in 2010?
Dagrin: I won't want to be caught pant's down with my best friend girl-friend and I don't want to be caught robbing a bank.

Jarmzone: Who's your favourite local artiste of 2009?
Dagrin: 2face is the number one, and a whole lot of other cats

Dagrin: Don't do to me, what I won't do to you

Late rapper, Olaitan Oladapo Olaonipekun, a.k.a Dagrin takes his role chair again in Nigeria's music scene for the umpteenth time after his painful demise in 2010. This time, he is evoked by Michael Stephen a.k.a Ruggedman - the industrious rapper who is currently hosting Star Quest for the third year (running since two weeks).

In case you don't know, Ruggedy Baba has shot the video for "Emini" featuring Dagrin, off his 'UNTOUCHABLE' album. Fast rising director, James Oludare directed the video to the song which was produced by Kash Eleven.

Fans will bet their heads on this teaser... the bone of contention? - is it actually Dagrin or not? Well, The Jarmzone can authoritatively confirm that the dude you see in this tease-video, is really Dagrin. The highpoint of this project is that Ruggedman had a plan for the album while he was working on it. He knew the songs he was shooting videos for, and he apparently worked towards it. We shall leave you to anticipate, thirst and wait for this video which is cued to drop on Friday, April 22.. exactly a year after Dagrin's death.

Real name Sampson Okonye, Chakka is from Delta State, born in Ogun State and raised in Lagos. ILL BLISS needs no introduction but if you need a clue, here's one... I re-visited a story I wrote for Hip Hop World Magazine on him and here it is...plus his new single "Otipo" featuring and produced by Suspect.

I may not be in the position to compare TV programming today to yester-years, but what the heck? I still remember how one of the local programmes, ‘WAZOBIA’ helped me in my language class in primary school. This was an educative and interesting programme that not only taught people how to use and apply other Nigerian dialect in their daily communication; it was also an indirect or probably a direct tool, used to promote unity and peace in the country. Talking about peace – is there really peace and unity in Nigeria today? Find my opinion at the end of this story.

Believe it or not – one of the illest rappers around this coast today is Tobechukwu Ejiofor a.k.a ILL BLISS. Even while we still maintain props for the vanguards like Junior and Pretty, Weird MC, The Remedies, Trybesmen, Defo Clan, Ruff, Rugged & Raw, SWAT ROOT, Rooftop MC’s, Ruggedman and all ‘em underground cats who started the indigenous struggle back in the days, we can’t help but keep celebrating the outstanding acts springing up in our strata on a daily.

Jacking a line from 2Shotz’…. “Incase you Neva know” - Illbliss is not one bit like your regular new kid on the block. This chubby, dark dude has been playing in Naija’s HipHop league for well over 10 years. “I started rapping over instrumentals and learning on other beats; from there, I learnt how to write bars and put the hook in. So when I met Obiwon, we got together and made a song called “Whatch’ u gon’ do?” in 1994 which we really liked”, he narrates.

For your info, Ill’ is a Political Science and International Relations graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nnsukka. From Imo State, Ill was born and raised in Enugu where he also acquired his Primary and Secondary education. He lost his dad while in Lagos serving his fatherland (NYSC) in 2000 but his mum still has his back till date.

Diagnosing the source of his music traits, Ill who lost his dad in 2002 when he was undergoing his mandatory NYSC scheme was musically nurtured from birth by his mother, Mrs. Stella Ejiofor who according to him had about 800 vinyl-records and tapes from different genre of music. His core orientation on rap came from his elder brother, Munachi Ejiofor who Ill’ refers to as ‘an epitome of HipHop’. “In the late eighties, he used to bring home a lot of old school tapes; he schooled me about break dancing, graffiti and the Hip Hop culture - funny enough, he doesn’t rap but he contributed to my musical background” Ill said.

His brother’s tutorials he thought, was all he needed to hit the big league until he met cats like Obiwon (A fellow student of UNN and a member of a rap group known as the Nigerian Rap Syndicates); Amaka (who introduced him to her brother – Elajoe) and Bright Igho a.k.a B–Elect - another product of UNN, who schooled him thoroughly on Hip-Hop and the essence of lyrical competence. “I was influenced so much by B-Elect. He was then a Christian rapper but he had a lot of skills. He got me stuffs from Heavy D, Master Ace, EPMD, Boogie down Production, KRS 1, so by the time I listened to all that stuff, it helped mould my lyricism.”

Bringing all these coefficients together, it won’t be difficult to decipher how Ill Bliss became one of the coalitions still known today as ‘Thoroughbreds’. Their award-winning rap single “Street-Hop” (2005) still draws accolades whenever they hit any stage to render it. The group also had songs like “Ewo”, “Datz Uz”, “Hard Times” and “Nyele Aka” all in 2001. The Thoroughbred era may be history but it certainly gets a chapter in any book on the evolution of Hip-Hop music in Nigeria.

If you gat your ears and eyes on the streets then you must have heard or seen the inscription “Ibo Boy”…. Ikechukwu or Ill’Bliss? It don’t matter who started the ‘Ibo Boy’ movement… one thing is for sure – Ill Bliss' single “Dat Ibo Boy” drew a lot of love and airplay.

I was listening to Kemistry sometime ago on Rhythm 93.7and in her words - “One thing I like about Ill Bliss is the reflection of his Igbo accent when he’s rapping”. Regarding the accent, Ill said, “It comes out naturally; there is no phoneme or faking. Everything I say is English but metaphors and punch lines most times are local and Naija. I listen to a lot of underground music from Neo Soul to Jazz to Hip-Hop and I found out that if you listen to a guy in France, he has a French accent and he is moving units. So I figured: stay human and do what makes you ‘you’.”

Getting Ill Bliss for an interview was not as easy as catching his video “U go Wound” featuring KEL and Suspect on TV. The dude may not be practicing politics or lobbying for an ambassadorial appointment at Aso Rock as his educational CV suggests but he can tell you about the 9 to 5 art.

His white-collar career started with Citizens Bank (now Spring Bank), from there he moved on to Assurance Bank and would spend three years in banking before he decided to drop the suit and tie job. “Banking is a very jealous sector. It requires 100% undivided attention and concentration. Then, I was always looking forward to Fridays cos that was my opportunity to discard the tie and trousers so I can wear my timbs, sneakers and trainers” he confessed. After his banking experiences, he dropped by at Planet One, Maryland to do event management before he moved to ‘Ultima’, the production company behind popular game show ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ and ‘Project Fame’.

Unlike some of his contemporaries who chose to drop their academic certificates and regular jobs for a full time course in music, Ill has programmed himself to keep a regular job, no matter how much money he’s making from his music. Today he manages activities within ‘Capital Hill’ owned by cinematographer, Clarence Peters. According to him, “I figured that with this platform, I can do anything I want. Tomorrow, you might see me presenting a Hip-Hop programme on a music channel or acting in a soap opera. It is all part of what I am doing but it is just a bigger part of it. Leave the job for music - Nah! I don’t think so!”

The American, British or Caribbean streets are different because of the level of exposure out there. If you come across an American who is suffering and living on welfare and give him a Nas, 50 Cents, 2Pac, Biggie, Jay Z or Game’s album, he understands everything they are saying because these rappers have also been there. They are able to cut across with their music.

For these countries, we understand that the level of literacy and enlightenment matters. But In Nigeria, your audiences are most times not literate but semi literate. People are looking for that daily speech in any form of language, in form of song that they can relate with. “It’s about the message, it’s rhyming and wordplay that has got a lot of sense; I’m talking lyrics that has a message. I gat a song titled “National Cake” - I am trying to let you know that there are people that sell gala for a living; I wonder how they pay their rents, I wonder how they go through crisis. On the same streets where you have people that sell gala, you have people in X5, Jaguars and some futuristic trucks and cars. Here, I am talking about politics and calling on the youths of Nigeria to let’s rally and stand in front of Aso Rock and let them see that there is really no future for us in this country”, the rapper explains.

A remarkable feat for Ill Bliss was when the ‘Illmatic’ Nasir Jones (Nas) chose him as the winner in the best rap single category at the maiden edition of Sound City Music Video Awards, 2008. They were sighted together at the after party pouring champagne from the same bottle. According to him, “Nas was like ‘you are on fire and I chose that video cos you reminded me of “Classic” that I did with Rakim and DJ Premiere. It was like KRS-1 and Kanye; it was like a ‘Nike Air Force1’ commercial. The concept is straight-up man: studio, the mic, the screen; I know that video didn’t cost you a lot but it showed rebellion’. Reacting to this Ill said, “I was like whoa! Coming from Nas that means I have not been wrong all this while. For me, it was a glorious moment. It was a big trophy: it is the first award I was getting besides the Hip Hop World Awards that Thoroughbred won in 2005 which was for the group”.

His debut album dropped in September 2008 and powered by his company ‘Goretti’ (inspired by his fiancée – Maria Goretti). On his debut were songs like “Lead the way” feat. C-meon, “Currency” feat. eLDee Tha Don, “Leader” feat. Durella and “Aiye po gan” feat. Terry G.

It is one thing for a new entrant to have the suave, the hits and an album but beyond that, our industry is yet to carve a proper strategy and formular to up-shoot market sales and attract corporate organizations. While the industry keeps working on that, it is advisable for everybody to keep doing good music.

For the aspiring and established names in the rap league, truth is if you don’t gat it, don’t bother to step up, cos a few no-smiling-MC’s like Ill Bliss are on ground to flush-off all soft sh*ts. And for those who really want my opinion about Peace or No peace in Nigeria today - My answer is boldly written on some bill boards situated at the Niger-Delta and Bakassi regions ……. Ya heard?!

the rap game, rapper Gino is back with a new single titled “I’m So Fly" featuring YQ and Naeto C.

Remember in 2005, Gino revolutionized the game when he dropped his classic video/single "No Be God?" (Shot by Woody Awa) and later released his debut album 'PAIN PLUS WORK'. The album which housed another hit opus "Farabale",remains one of the best Rap albums to come out of Nigeria. Well if you think the rapper was done, you may want to have a re-think because Gino only went down to work. With such feat, you can say he dished songs worth two albums.

Now satisfied with what he has, the C.E.O of MOBB Records is finally set to drop his highly anticipated sophomore album. The first joint off his return album is what you have right here - “I’m So Fly", produced by multiple Award winning producer - Sossick.

DAGRIN COMES BACK TO LIFE ON GHETTO DREAMS

Some of you know the story already, some of you were told and a few of us were there when it all happened... Well here's a reminder of THE TRUE STORY OF DAGRIN'S DEMISE. The video below is a trailer off 'Ghetto Dreams' - a movie shot to immortalize Dagrin like the American greats - Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.

The Jarmzone cannot authoritatively affirm accuracy level of the coming movie but we won't be disappointed if the producers do not deliver up to 90% (it's impossible to score a 100% on a project like this). How-ever, we gathered that the late rapper's father gave absolute consent and support for this project, so a great deal of information about Dagrin should have been shared.

From the trailer we can see some of Nollywood's finest: Rachael Oniga, Kayode Odumosu (Pa Kasumu), Gabriel Afolayan, Oyindamola Odesola and AMAA winner, Doris Simeon. Other faces are Kenny St. Brown, Jaywon and upcoming act, Trybson Dudukoko. The movie, directed by Daniel Ademinokan will be released on the auspices of Stingomania Entertainment. Fans who can't wait to see this prospective blockbuster would have to be patient till a soon to be confirmed date in April 2011.

IS HAKYM THE DREAM CAMPAIGNING FOR FASHOLA?

Hakym The Dream would pass as one of Nigeria’s very talented producers cum singer. His debut single “Dey There” is a slow jam but the catch phrase off the song is popular on the street. So do not be surprised when someone tells you “Your head dey there”…it simply means, “You are recognized” or “you are approved”.

The recent development from Hakym’s camp lately is a song and video praising and calling for the support of the incumbent Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola. The Jarmzone caught up with the soft-spoken artiste to know what he is up to and he said, “I’m just a regular citizen of Nigeria who adores good governance; and looking at Lagos where I live today, I believe everyone will agree that Gov. Fashola has done very well for this state. It won’t be a bad idea to re-elect him to continue with the good work he is doing already”.

The Jarmzone probed to know if this gesture was financially motivated and he said, “Not at all. I have never met the governor before, I was motivated to do the song which is an interpolation of my hit single “Dey There” based on what the governor has done in places like Oshodi, where I ply everyday; places like Surulere, Lagos Island, Badagry Expressway and so on”.

We also gathered that the multi-talented artiste who has directed a handful of videos with AK-One will unveil a caller-back tune code for the song before this week runs out. Jarmzone also spoke with Hakym’s manager, Abdul, he said, “This is an action with noble intent…if governor Fashola eventually come across the song or video, that will be nice and if he doesn’t get to see it – no problem. It does not change the fact that he is a role model for other state governors to emulate and his head dey there for life”.

OLAMIDE’S DEBUT ALBUM DROPS ON MARCH 21

Words reaching The Jarmzone say Olamide's album titled 'RapSoDi' will hit record stores this March 21. The rapper who some have likened to the late Dagrin made an impressive entry with his first single "Eni Duro" in 2010. His acceptance by teeming fans has attracted a number of artistes, some of whom have featured him, while others are on the queue.

Apart from the hit opus "Eni Duro", we gathered that Olamide's 'RapSoDi' would house other songs like "Apa Ti Jabo", "Legendary" Ft 9ice, "Lift Him High" Ft. Cabasa, and "Kelegbo" Ft. Ajasa. Also confirmed on the album is one of the toasts of the moment – Whizkid as well as 2Phat, Adol, B'ranks and 2010 MTN Project Fame winner, Chidinma.

Full name Olamide Adedeji hails from Ogun State, Nigeria but was born and brought up in Bariga, Lagos. According to him, "my mentor is Jay Z but I'm also a big fan of Lil' Wayne, Birdman and Ludacris". He discovered his music talent in the year 2000 and has held on to it till date. He is signed to ID Cabasa's Coded Tunes and managed by TP-Concepts.

In other news, Adol who shares management ties with Olamide will be releasing his first album on Saturday, March 14. In a chat with their manager, Toni Payne, she said, "there is high demand for both albums (marketed by Uba Pacific) here in Nigeria and abroad, so I'm expecting these to be one of the highest selling debut albums".
